Job Description
Eco Home Builders is a premier design-build construction company in Southern California specializing in high-end residential remodels, ADUs, and new construction. We're not your typical contractor — we're building a legacy brand with systems, discipline, and an obsession for quality.THE ROLE
We're hiring a Director of Construction Operations to own execution, quality, and profitability on our most complex projects — including challenging hillside builds, custom homes, and intricate design-build remodels.
You'll be the right hand to our CEO, managing high-stakes projects while building the systems and training the team to scale. This isn't just project management — you're part superintendent, part QC inspector, part operations strategist, and part teacher.
WHAT YOU'LL DOOwn Complex Projects End-to-End
- Manage high-end residential projects (remodels, ADUs, new construction, design-build)
- Coordinate subcontractors, schedules, budgets, permits, and inspections
- Handle challenging builds: hillside grading, coastal permits, structural engineering, retaining walls
- Run daily operations in Buildertrend — schedules, budgets, RFIs, change orders, client communication
Quality Control & Field Oversight
- Weekly job site walks with QC checklists (framing, rough MEP, finishes, punch lists)
- Catch issues before they're expensive — scope creep, installation errors, code violations
- Step in as superintendent when needed on critical phases or at-risk projects
- Enforce company standards for cleanliness, safety, and client experience
Pre-Construction & Subcontractor Management
- Review and vet subcontractor bids for completeness, scope gaps, and pricing
- Select and onboard trades — check licenses, insurance, references, past work
- Build a deep bench of reliable subcontractors across all trades
- Value-engineer projects to hit budget without sacrificing quality
Build Systems That Scale
- Create SOPs, checklists, and templates for project phases (pre-con, handoffs, inspections, closeout)
- Train project coordinators and PMs so they can handle standard projects independently
- Optimize Buildertrend workflows — automations, dashboards, client portals
- Lead weekly coordination meetings with the team
Support Office Operations
- Review proposals, change orders, and contracts for accuracy and margin protection
- Track project metrics: profitability, schedule adherence, change order ratio
- Communicate with clients on high-stakes issues (delays, budget, design conflicts)
- Report weekly to CEO on project status, risks, and opportunities
WHAT YOU BRINGNon-Negotiables (Must-Haves)
- ✅ 10+ years in high-end residential construction (custom homes, major remodels, design-build)
- ✅ Buildertrend expert — you live in it daily and know how to use it as a weapon
- ✅ Experience managing complex projects from bid to closeout
- ✅ Hillside/slope construction experience (grading, retaining walls, soils, drainage)
- ✅ PM + Superintendent hybrid skills — you can run the office AND walk the job site
- ✅ San Diego or Orange County based — you'll be on job sites 2-4 days/week
- ✅ QC obsessive — you catch problems before they become change orders
Ideal (Nice-to-Haves)
- Experience with coastal commission permits and Del Mar/Encinitas/La Jolla builds
- Existing subcontractor relationships in San Diego/OC
- Procore, PlanGrid, or similar software experience (in addition to Buildertrend)
- Design-build fluency — you can read plans, understand engineering, and collaborate with architects
- Track record of hitting project margins and schedule deadlines consistently
