Lead GCP Cloud Engineer – Engineering-First Cloud Consultancy

Location: Hybrid (1/2 days onsite in New York)

Salary: $195,000 – $230,000 + Equity Options

We're partnering with a boutique, engineering-led consultancy that delivers advanced cloud, data, and AI solutions for some of the world’s most security-conscious enterprises. With zero red tape and a bias for action, their team consists of builders, not managers — engineers who want to shape modern infrastructure through hands-on leadership.

They’re now looking for a Lead GCP Cloud Engineer to take ownership of technically complex cloud projects, lead from the front, and help clients adopt secure, scalable GCP-native architectures that are production-ready and AI-enabled.

About the Role

This is a true hands-on leadership role — not a slide-deck position. You’ll own architectural decisions, write infrastructure code, mentor engineers, and work closely with clients to implement high-impact cloud platforms. From AI enablement to secure pipeline delivery, you’ll be at the heart of the most critical initiatives.

You'll be working with tools like Terraform, GKE, Vertex AI, Cloud Run, and Config Connector , while driving standards for security, CI/CD, observability, and developer experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead Critical Projects – Own design and delivery of secure, scalable GCP infrastructure across enterprise environments.
• Stay Hands-On – Write Terraform modules, implement CI/CD pipelines, deploy infrastructure, and debug complex issues.
• Technical Strategy & Architecture – Drive high-impact architectural decisions with a focus on maintainability and security.
• Mentor & Uplift – Share expertise through code reviews, pairing, design docs, and guiding other engineers.
• AI/ML Platform Enablement – Build cloud foundations for Vertex AI, Gemini, vector stores, and other AI workloads.
• Developer Experience & Automation – Implement reusable pipelines, developer tooling, and Policy-as-Code practices to improve velocity and security.
• Security & Compliance by Default – Embed best practices in identity federation, network controls, and workload protection.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration – Be a trusted advisor to client engineers and stakeholders, bringing deep technical insight to business-critical work.

What We're Looking For

• Proven GCP infrastructure expertise , including GKE, IAM, BigQuery, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, VPC design, Spanner, and service networking.
• Advanced Kubernetes knowledge , especially in security, observability, and operating GKE at scale.
• Deep fluency with Infrastructure-as-Code , particularly Terraform , along with KCC, CDKTF, or Pulumi.
• Demonstrated experience building secure CI/CD pipelines , integrating tools like image scanning, artifact signing, and Policy-as-Code.
• Strong security mindset , including knowledge of workload identity, least privilege, and secure networking.
• Proficiency in Python or Java (Go is a bonus) for automation and tooling.
• Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or distributed tracing stacks.
• Strong communicator who can explain trade-offs to both technical and business audiences.
• Background in regulated or large-scale enterprise environments with high security and compliance requirements.
• Natural mentor with a collaborative mindset and a high technical bar.
• Self-starter who makes decisions, tests assumptions, and iterates quickly.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base Salary: $195,000 – $230,000
• Equity: Phantom stock with 4-year vesting and annual top-ups
