Job Opening: Opto-Mechanical Technician, University of Rochester, Laboratory for Laser Energetics

The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is seeking an Experimental Operations Technician to join our XOPS Processing team. LLE is a nationally recognized research facility at the forefront of laser-driven fusion energy, supporting cutting-edge science and technology initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Load and unload X-ray film and image plate cartridges used in nuclear physics experiments
• Process photographic film and image plates
• Maintain film processing equipment and associated chemistry
• Support the operation of experimental diagnostics and laser physics equipment
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and optical issues
• Perform routine preventative maintenance
• Operate and maintain complex vacuum systems
• Qualify as a New York State Radiation Worker
• Maintain radiological containment areas
• Create and update system documentation and operating procedures
• Work morning and/or evening shifts as required

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team-based environment
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

You’re a Great Fit If You Have Experience With:

• Darkroom or photographic film development
• Automated film processors and/or image plate scanners
• Chemistry operations
• Radiological materials or controlled environments
• Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software
• Meeting requirements for security clearance

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics OR
• 1–3 years of experience in a technical or hands-on laboratory role
• Ability to obtain a security clearance

Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week)

Shifts Required:

• Morning (6:00 AM start)
• Regular (8:30 AM start)
• Evening (1:00 PM start)
• No weekends required
