The Project Manager is a supervisory role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of assigned work crews or projects. They will manage the superintendent and foreman for the assigned project and will adjust crew assignments as needed for logistical reasons such as weather or workload. The Project Manager is ultimately responsible for the successful execution of the project, ensuring that tasks are completed safely, on time, and within budget. In addition to managing operations, the Project Manager will also act as an Estimator, projecting and controlling construction costs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Focus – Estimator

• Prepare bids by gathering information and setting project priorities.

• Develop construction budgets by studying plans, updating specifications, and projecting costs for each aspect of the project.

• Evaluate offers and costs by analyzing changes, additions, and site requirements. 

• Obtain bids from vendors and subcontractors by specifying materials, identifying qualified subcontractors, and negotiating prices.

• Resolve cost discrepancies by collecting and analyzing relevant information.

• Prepare special reports on project progress by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data.

• Maintain quality service by adhering to organization standards.

• Ensure communication continuity between corporate, division, and local teams by documenting and sharing actions, irregularities, and needs.

• Stay updated on industry trends by attending workshops, reading publications, and engaging with professional networks.

• Contribute to team efforts by accomplishing related results as needed.

Primary Focus – Project Manager

• Supervise the foreperson and assigned crew members to ensure smooth operations. 

• Report to the senior supervisor or owner as dictated by the specific job responsibilities.

• Ensure that all equipment, tools, and trucks are checked and cleared for operation before each shift.

• Report and address all safety concerns, halting operations if necessary to ensure safety standards are met.

• Make regular contact with customers and clients to address concerns and update on progress.

• Schedule jobs and employee shifts to meet operational needs.

• Ensure all materials and resources are available before arriving at a job site.

• Coordinate with internal and external teams to ensure the project is on schedule and within scope.

Secondary Focus – Project Manager

• Check trucks and equipment at the start of a shift to ensure proper operation, including fluid levels, mechanics, and tool readiness.

• Clean and maintain equipment and trucks as necessary.

• Assist with general maintenance of company-owned buildings and equipment.

• Support mechanics with more in-depth repairs and maintenance as required.

• Perform general labor tasks on-site, such as shoveling, raking, and wheel barreling.

• Install asphalt, gravel, and other materials as needed.

• Operate basic equipment such as plate compactors, saws, and shop equipment for general maintenance.

• Lift objects over 40 lbs., move materials, and stack goods as required.

• Mix coatings, paint, and perform other related tasks.

• Operate striping and sealcoating equipment.

• Exposure to petroleum products, cleaning solvents, and hot asphalt.

• Some duties may require nighttime work or working in adverse weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required. An associate or bachelor’s degree is preferred.

• 8+ years of experience as a Project Manager in the construction industry and experience with estimating is required.

• Ability to pass a drug screening test as required by federal, state, or local regulations.

• Valid and unexpired driver’s license.

Work Conditions / Physical Demands:

• Primarily standing and sitting with freedom of movement throughout the day.

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as bending, lifting, and stooping.

• Outdoor work is required, often in inclement weather conditions (rain, snow, ice, heat).

• Frequently required to work long hours, and sometimes nights and weekends,

during the construction and plowing season.

• Regular physical activity includes walking, climbing, bending, standing, pushing, and lifting.

• Work environment involves road construction settings with exposure to hazards like dust, vehicle traffic, and elevated noise levels.
