Job Description

We currently have an opening for a Research Technician II in the lab of Dr. Barbara J. Meyer at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Meyer is a Genetics, Genomics, Evolution, and Development Professor in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department at University of California (UC), Berkeley, and an adjunct professor in the Biochemistry and Biophysics Department at UC, San Francisco’s School of Medicine. The Meyer laboratory investigates mechanisms of cell-fate determination, genome editing, the role of chromosome structure and chromatin modification in gene regulation, and the molecular evolution of chromosome-wide mechanisms of gene control in the nematode C. elegans , with an emphasis on X-chromosome dosage compensation, which balances gene expression between XX hermaphrodites and XO males, and the specification of sexual fate.  Previous work by Meyer’s team also showed that X-chromosome gene regulation is functionally related to a challenge of all somatic and germline chromosomes: achieving proper structure prior to chromosome segregation, a topic they continue to investigate. Approaches include genetics, spatial genomics, single-molecule biophysics, super-resolution imaging, computational modeling, and structural studies including X-ray crystallography.  More information can be found on their website:

What We Provide:

  • One-on-one mentorship with a senior research scientist while working collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Participation in exciting research projects, utilizing a vast repertoire of experimental approaches, with potential for authorship on research papers and the opportunity to present original work at scientific meetings.

  • A team that fosters continuous learning and cultivates an environment of collaboration.

  • Opportunities for professional and educational development and growth, including assistance in preparing for graduate school applications and interviews.

  • Training in science writing and communication.

  • Opportunities to mentor undergraduate researchers and help train the next generation of scientists.

  • An opportunity to work in the beautiful Berkeley-San Francisco Bay Area, a show case for the natural wonders of California.

  • A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform experiments using molecular, biochemical, genetic, genome editing, spatial genomics, and high-resolution microscopy approaches for ongoing research projects investigating cell-fate determination and chromosome-wide regulation of gene expression in the nematode  C. elegans.

  • Assist scientists and technicians by performing various research procedures and operating a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment.

  • Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs, and reports.  Will use software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and test reports.

  • Operate laboratory apparatus and instruments; read and record instrument data; tabulate data; keep laboratory records.

  • Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.

  • Will maintain nematodes, and bacterial cultures for experimental purposes.

  • Stay current in research area through applicable literature.

What You Bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree in biology or related discipline is required.

  • 1-2 years of previous hands-on laboratory experience is required along with a strong understanding of molecular biology and eukaryotic genetics. Significant laboratory experience obtained during undergraduate studies is acceptable and will be considered.

  • Previous hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques and genetic analysis is required.

  • Previous experience with  C. elegans genetics, computational analysis of genomics and imaging data would be a plus.

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills along with organizational skills, prioritization skills, time management skills, and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Proficient computer skills.  Some knowledge in programming using python and/R would be ideal.

  • Ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team.

  • Ability to follow instruction with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be mentored.

  • Able to interact positively with all levels of staff and be self-motivated.
