Job Description

Position Description:

Work Authorization Process Knowledge:

  • Direct experience in creating, processing, and managing Work Authorization Forms (WAFs), tagouts, or similar work controls.
  • Understanding of how WAFs tie into safety, quality assurance (QA), production sequencing, and system turnovers.

Familiarity with:

  • Hot work and confined space controls
  • Tagout/lockout procedures
  • Permit to work (PTW) systems
  • Testing and inspection hold points related to WAFs

Planning & Production Coordination:

  • Experience working with planning, engineering, and trades to issue and close WAFs.
  • Ability to read production schedules, blueprints, and system diagrams.
  • Strong coordination skills to align WAFs with planned work packages and avoid production delays.

Key Knowledge Areas:

  • System and zone familiarity
  • Working knowledge of shipboard systems (e.g., HVAC, electrical, piping, propulsion).
  • Familiarity with system turnovers and how WAFs integrate with testing and inspection milestones.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Understanding of how WAFs feed into QA records, test packages, and system completion.
  • Experience working under ABS, NAVSEA, or USACE specifications is a strong plus.

Software Tools:

  • Experience with electronic WAF systems and ERP tools (e.g., ShipConstructor).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and production tracking systems.

Other Skills and Traits:

  • High attention to detail — WAFs are legally binding and safety critical.
  • Strong communicator — Must coordinate with Engineering, Trades, QA, Safety, and Program Management.
  • Ability to enforce accountability and escalate delays or WAF discrepancies.
  • Process-oriented — someone who can manage high volumes of forms while tracking open items and ensuring compliance.

Education/Certification Requirements:

Required Experience and Background:

  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Marine Technology, Engineering, or Construction Management.
  • OSHA 10/30, Confined Space Entry, Tagout, or Work Control certifications are a plus.
  • Shipyard Experience (3–5+ Years Preferred)
  • Hands-on experience in a shipyard production environment, ideally in new construction or repair.
  • Familiarity with major trades (structural, piping, electrical, mechanical, coatings).
  • Knowledge of work sequencing, zone/block strategies, and compartment completion flow.
  • Familiarity with shipboard systems or industrial safety controls.
  • Attention to detail is critical to this position.

Compensation:

$48-$57/hr

Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.

Benefit packages for this role will start on the 31st day of employment and include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement account access with employer matching. Employees in this role are also entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.
